Amazon search engine optimization
How the A9 algorithm ranks products — with the exact title, bullet and backend formula
Amazon's A9 engine (what sellers now call A10) does two things in order: it filters the catalogue down to listings that are textually relevant to the query, then sorts those by how likely each one is to convert. Everything below maps to that split — the ranking-factor table shows what is measured, and the formulas show which field each keyword belongs in.
A9 ranking factors, by weight
| Signal | Impact | What it means for your listing |
|---|---|---|
| Text relevance (title, bullets, backend) | Highest | A9 can only rank a listing for a query it is indexed for. If the phrase does not appear in your title, bullets, backend search terms or structured attributes, the listing is filtered out before performance is ever considered. |
| Conversion rate | Highest | Sessions that end in a purchase are the strongest performance signal. Two listings with identical keywords will separate purely on which one turns clicks into orders. |
| Sales velocity and history | High | Consistent unit sales per keyword, not one-off spikes. Amazon scores recent velocity heavily, which is why a paid launch fades fast if organic conversion does not follow. |
| Click-through rate on the SERP | High | Driven by main image, price, Prime badge, rating and the first ~80 characters of the title. Low CTR tells A9 the match is weak even when the keywords are perfect. |
| Price competitiveness | Medium–High | Total landed price versus comparable ASINs. Being far above the category median depresses both CTR and conversion, and the Buy Box follows price too. |
| Reviews and rating | Medium | Rating count and average act as a conversion multiplier rather than a direct ranking input — but because conversion is a ranking input, they move rankings indirectly. |
| Inventory and account health | Medium | Stockouts reset velocity and can drop a keyword ranking within days. Late shipments, defects and suppressed listings cap how high strong SEO can take you. |
| External and sponsored traffic | Low–Medium | Off-Amazon traffic that converts, plus Sponsored Products data, feed the same behavioural loop. Useful to seed a keyword, never a substitute for on-listing relevance. |
The Amazon title formula
Category limits run from 80 to 200 characters, but mobile search truncates around 80. Rank for the long tail with the full string, convert with the first 80:
Home & kitchen
Water Bottle Best Quality Sports Gym Travel Bottle Cheap Durable
Hydrova Stainless Steel Water Bottle 32 oz, Vacuum Insulated Leakproof Flask, Keeps Cold 24h, Wide Mouth, Matte Black
Brand + product type + size land in the first 80 characters, then attributes that match real queries ("insulated", "leakproof", "wide mouth") instead of subjective filler like "best" and "cheap", which nobody searches.
Electronics accessory
USB C Cable 2 Pack Fast Charging Cable for Phone Tablet Laptop Universal
Voltix USB C to USB C Cable 2-Pack 6 ft, 100W Fast Charging Cord for MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, Galaxy S24, Braided Nylon
Compatibility models and the wattage are the highest-intent long tails in this category; "universal" ranks for nothing and hides the specs shoppers filter by.
Health & beauty
Vitamin C Serum Anti Aging Serum for Face Skin Care Products for Women
Lumea Vitamin C Serum for Face 1 fl oz, 20% Vitamin C with Hyaluronic Acid and Vitamin E, Brightening Serum for Dark Spots
Concentration, active ingredients and the concrete problem ("dark spots") match how shoppers search; repeating "serum" three times wastes indexed space with no extra reach.
The five-bullet formula
Bullet 1 — primary benefit
Open with 3–5 capitalised words naming the top benefit, then one sentence of proof. Place your second-most important keyword here, not a repeat of the title's first word.
Bullet 2 — specifications that filter
Dimensions, capacity, wattage, material, quantity. These are the terms shoppers add to queries ("32 oz", "100W", "stainless steel") and the ones returns are caused by.
Bullet 3 — compatibility or use case
Who it's for and where it's used. Absorbs long-tail queries ("for MacBook Pro", "for oily skin") that never fit the title.
Bullet 4 — objection handling
Answer the top one-star complaint in the category before it happens: care instructions, warranty, safety certification, what's in the box.
Bullet 5 — trust and differentiation
Guarantee, certification, brand promise. Close with the remaining secondary keyword rather than a slogan.
Backend search terms: the 250-byte rules
- 250 bytes per field: count bytes, not words — accented characters cost more than one byte.
- No commas or punctuation. Amazon parses the field as space-separated tokens; separators only burn allowance.
- Never repeat a word already indexed in the title, bullets or attributes — duplication adds zero reach.
- Use synonyms, alternate spellings, common misspellings, regional terms and abbreviations here.
- No competitor brands, no trademarked terms, no claims like "best seller" — these risk suppression.
- Singular vs plural, and word order, do not matter: index one form and let A9 handle the rest.
After: hydration flask thermos canteen bpa free gym cycling hiking travel gift stainless
Five mistakes that cap rankings
- Repeating the same keyword in title, all five bullets and the backend field instead of covering variations
- Writing titles for the algorithm so they truncate into nonsense on mobile, killing CTR
- Leaving structured attributes (colour, size, material, intended use) blank because they duplicate the title
- Launching with heavy Sponsored spend on a listing that converts under 5% — velocity fades the moment ads stop
- Letting the ASIN go out of stock: the keyword ranking rebuilds from near zero
Apply this formula to your own ASIN in one click
Paste an Amazon URL and Rank Up List writes the A9-ready title, the five structured bullets and a backend keyword string that respects the 250-byte limit — based on a live scan of the listings currently ranking for your keyword.
